Police officers who investigated the murder of Yoel Quispe confirmed in the La Coruña court that the main suspect attempted to divert suspicion towards another person. José Luis Franco, the only person remanded in custody in this case, provided officers with the name of a third party when they located him following the incident, according to accounts given during the fifth session of the full trial.
The incident took place in the early hours of 24 December 2024 on Juan Flórez street in La Coruña. Yoel Quispe, the victim, died as a result of a stab wound to the chest. The officers who attended the scene described large quantities of blood and the inability to find the weapon used.
According to witness accounts, an argument triggered by a shove led to an initial fight, followed by a second confrontation in which Franco became involved. Subsequently, from prison, he sent a letter to Yoel's parents admitting that he was the one who delivered the fatal knife blow.
In court, officers explained that Franco contacted them following the crime, displaying a calm demeanour and offering to cooperate, but insisting that he knew the true culprit. The investigators did not believe that account.
The Public Prosecutor's Office is requesting a 14-year sentence for Franco and the dismissal of proceedings against the other two defendants. The victim's parents, by contrast, demand accountability for all three: Franco as the perpetrator, a second young man for supplying him with the blade, and a third for his involvement.
The defence lawyers are requesting outright acquittal for two of them, arguing a lack of evidence. For Franco, following his admission of the facts, his representative is requesting that it be classified as manslaughter through negligence or serious injury with fatal outcome, with a minimum sentence.
Meanwhile, two individuals who attacked Yoel in the brawl accepted sentences of nine months, suspended under conditions. The proceedings will resume on 11 June with the questioning of the main defendant.
