Phishing fraud in Cabanillas del Campo: fake SMS messages about refuse collection charges

Fake SMS messages impersonate Cabanillas Town Council to steal data

The Cabanillas del Campo Town Council has detected a phishing campaign targeting residents of the municipality, according to aytocabanillas.org. Cybercriminals are sending text messages to mobile phones warning of an alleged non-payment of the refuse collection charge and including a link to make the payment.

The town council has no record of any resident having been defrauded so far, but urges extreme caution. Phishing is a technique by which criminals impersonate the identity of companies, official entities or trusted individuals with the aim of stealing confidential data, installing malicious software or committing financial fraud.

The Town Council reminds residents that it never sends SMS messages with links of this type. Legitimate SMS messages from the council are limited to notifying residents that there is a communication in the recipient's citizen folder, without including any payment link. Municipal notices that do contain links arrive exclusively through the official municipal information application, never by SMS. Under no circumstances will the Town Council send a link to pay municipal fees or taxes.

The municipality also recommends that residents educate themselves on the safe use of new technologies. To this end, it highlights the courses and workshops organised throughout the year for different groups—schoolchildren, young people, older people and women, amongst others—as well as for the general public, through entities such as Incibe, the Cibervoluntari@s Foundation or the regional programmes Ciudadanía Digital and CapacitaTIC+55.
