Gender-based murder in Callosa de Segura: the 48-year-old man is now in custody
The Guardia Civil of Alicante confirmed on Tuesday afternoon the murder of a 48-year-old Spanish woman at the hands of her partner in Callosa de Segura, a municipality of around 20,000 inhabitants located in the Vega Baja region, near Orihuela. According to elpais.com, the alleged perpetrator, also Spanish and of the same age, strangled the victim at the home they shared.
The case has been classified as gender-based violence and is the 23rd femicide recorded in Spain so far this year. The aggressor was arrested shortly after the incident became known.
The investigation has been handed to the EMUME, the Guardia Civil's Women and Minors Unit. Authorities have stated that there were no previous records of gender-based violence between the couple. There were also no children in common nor minors living at the residence.
Early on Tuesday, the Government Delegation Against Gender Violence announced on social network X that it was gathering information about a possible gender-based murder in the province of Alicante.
Since the official statistics began in 2003, a total of 1,363 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners in Spain.
