A man shot dead in central Barcelona has been identified as a fugitive of Serbian origin wanted by Belgian authorities. The Mossos d'Esquadra were able to establish his true identity through fingerprint records, with the assistance of Interpol.
The individual was carrying false documentation, which initially complicated the investigation. The victim was shot in the head last Wednesday on the central Balmes street, directly opposite a police barracks.
The gunman managed to escape and remains at large. During his flight he abandoned the murder weapon, a bicycle helmet presumably used to conceal the pistol, and a mobile phone, all of which were left at a bus stop near the crime scene.
Investigators are considering the hypothesis that it was a settling of accounts linked to criminal networks from the Balkans. The case, referred to as Operation Diamond, remains under judicial secrecy.
