An analysis prepared by the National Police concludes that only ETA's leadership had the necessary power to order the attack on the car park of Terminal 4 at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport. The study, published by La Voz de Galicia, strengthens the possibility that Josu Ternera, who led the organisation at that time, could be tried for this attack.
On 30 December 2006, a van loaded with approximately one thousand kilograms of explosive material exploded in the T4 car park. The detonation occurred during a ceasefire announced by the Basque armed group and claimed the lives of two Ecuadorian workers, Diego Estacio and Carlos Alonso Palate, in addition to wounding dozens of people.
The investigators maintain that the order to carry out the action came from the upper echelons of the band. This line of argument points directly to Ternera as the person responsible with command capacity over the operation.
The historic ETA leader was captured in France in 2019 after spending a long time in hiding. Although in 2017 the High Court overturned a previous conviction for glorifying terrorism, he currently faces various legal proceedings related to his time leading ETA.
