Google News ES — Crime (es) reports that the National Police discovered last Tuesday, 25 August, a consignment of more than half a tonne of cocaine in a saloon car intercepted at kilometre 692 of the A-66, within the municipal area of Mérida.
The vehicle was carrying 18 bundles with signs of moisture and wrapped in netting, a method commonly used to facilitate the recovery of merchandise from water. Each bundle contained 30 individually wrapped packages with an approximate weight of one kilogramme per unit, bringing the total to more than 500 kilogrammes.
Two people were travelling inside the saloon car. One of them was a minor and was handed over to their parents on the instruction of the Public Prosecutor's Office. The second detainee was placed at the disposal of the competent authority, accused of drug trafficking and falsification of documents.
The operation originated in an investigation by the National Police of Andalusia, as confirmed this Friday by the Government delegate in Extremadura, José Luis Quintana. "An initiative of the National Police of Andalusia," Quintana clarified, without specifying the role played by the Extremadura units and appealing to the need to maintain "maximum confidentiality" on an investigation that remains open.
The officers obtained their own information which enabled them to activate a device to locate the vehicle and monitor its movements until intercepting it at the height of the Extremadura capital.
"It is a very significant haul," Quintana valued, highlighting the work of the National Police and the Civil Guard in the fight against drug trafficking.
The National Police has called a press conference for next Monday at which it will release new details about the operation. Ongoing investigations will have to determine the origin of the consignment, its final destination and whether there are more people involved in its transport.
