A 20-year-old student was detained two weeks ago in Burgos on suspicion of jihadist terrorism. The detainee, a national of the United Arab Emirates, was studying at the University of Burgos when Civil Guard officers arrested him in the military quarter of the city.
According to reporting by ABC, the young man had formally submitted an application for places in humanities and political science courses at a university in Madrid. He had also already secured accommodation in the capital.
The police operation, which also resulted in a second arrest in Valladolid, has left fellow students and the detainee's neighbours bewildered. These individuals are now trying to find signs of his radicalisation in his previous attitudes and comments.
The detainee led an apparently ordinary existence. He frequented the campus, the gymnasium and his residence on Calle Bailén, where he lived thanks to a host programme for foreign students. His social circle was limited to other students from his country and classmates in his Spanish language course.
For more than a year, the young man had expressed his intention to extend his stay in Spain. To this end, he had begun admission procedures at university centres in Madrid, a particular process for those coming from educational systems different from the Spanish one.
The National Court has issued an order for provisional detention. The case remains under court secrecy, so the details of the investigation remain confidential.
