A Spanish judge has ordered Begoña Gómez, wife of Government president Pedro Sánchez, to surrender her passport and appear before the court twice a month whilst a corruption case against her is investigated.
Judge imposes precautionary measures on Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Government president
A Spanish judge ordered this Saturday that Begoña Gómez, spouse of the Government president, Pedro Sánchez, surrender her passport and present herself before the court twice per month. The measure is part of an investigation into alleged corruption in which she is implicated.
Gómez must appear periodically before the courts whilst proceedings develop. The magistrate has also prohibited her from leaving national territory. The date of the trial has yet to be set.
The accusations centre on whether Gómez exploited her status as wife of the head of the executive to obtain sponsors for university training for which she was responsible. She denies the charges.
The investigation has generated pressure from the political opposition, where various parties have demanded Sánchez's resignation. The president himself, however, considers that the case against his wife is part of a right-wing strategy to destabilise his government.
