Begoña Gómez, wife of Spain's prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, faces charges of embezzlement, abuse of office and other corruption-related offences. The charges were brought following an investigation that lasted two years, according to The Guardian.
The 55-year-old woman denies having committed irregularities in the matter, which was initiated by a complaint from the union Manos Limpias, linked to the far right.
The court hearing the case ruled on Saturday to impose a series of precautionary measures on her. She must surrender her travel document, she is forbidden from leaving the country and must appear fortnightly before the court. The trial date has not yet been set.
The Spanish prime minister has repeatedly described the accusations as unfounded, characterising them as politically motivated slanders. His party, the PSOE, has denounced a political persecution in its official communications. Sánchez came to power promising to end the corruption that affected the previous government of the Popular Party, although there are currently several investigations ongoing against members of his family circle and political allies. For now, Sánchez himself is not implicated in any of these cases.
