Wife of Spanish president charged with corruption, unable to leave country
Begoña Gómez, wife of Spanish Government President Pedro Sánchez, cannot leave the country after being charged with various corruption-related offences, according to the Guardian.
Following an investigation launched in 2024, Gómez is accused of embezzlement of funds, abuse of office, corporate corruption and misappropriation of economic resources. The judge overseeing the case, Juan Carlos Peinado, ordered the spouse of the head of Government to surrender her passport and appear before court twice a month until sentence is passed.
The trial date has not yet been set.
Sánchez has repeatedly described the accusations as unfounded and has complained that it is a campaign of defamation motivated by politics. According to the president, political rivals and media outlets are persecuting his family.
Other people are also under investigation in the president's circle. David Sánchez, the president's brother, is accused of abuse of office, whilst former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos allegedly received bribes in public contracts. Both deny the accusations.
According to the Guardian, these investigations represent a serious threat to Government stability.
