A Spanish court has ruled that Begoña Gómez, wife of government president Pedro Sánchez, will stand trial for corruption. Additionally, she is banned from leaving national territory. This is set out in the judicial ruling published on Friday.
Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has ordered Gómez to surrender her passport and to report to authorities twice a month until a verdict is issued in her case. The investigation focuses on the creation of a chair at the Complutense University of Madrid, linked to the person being investigated, as well as the alleged use of public resources and relationships of influence for the benefit of personal interests.
According to the published ruling, magistrate Peinado considers that the investigation has gathered sufficient evidence regarding the offences attributed to Gómez. In his order, the judge explains that the chair was used as an instrument for the private professional advancement of the person being investigated.
Begoña Gómez, 55, has denied all the accusations attributed to her.
