Spanish president's wife, charged with corruption, cannot leave the country
Investigating judge Juan Carlos Peinado has summoned Begoña Gómez, wife of Government President Pedro Sánchez, to appear before the court on several alleged crimes. These include abuse of office, corruption in the private sphere and misappropriation of public funds. Gómez denies the accusations, according to Index.hu.
The investigation was initiated following a complaint filed in 2024 by the "Clean Hands" trade union. Following that complaint, the corresponding judicial proceedings were opened. The president's office does not agree with the judge's decision, arguing that it is driven solely by political motivations.
Pedro Sánchez is one of the few left-wing leaders still heading a government in Europe. Several of his associates are being investigated in matters that allegedly involve bribes accepted in public contracts, oil and gas deals, and the purchase of face masks during the pandemic. In none of these cases has the head of the Executive been named as a defendant.
Moreover, Spain's Supreme Court has confirmed that an investigation has also been opened against former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. He is suspected of having run a network that obtained profits through lobbying activities on behalf of third parties. Zapatero, like Gómez, rejects the charges.
