Spanish President Pedro Sánchez's Wife Must Face Trial on Corruption Charges
A judge ruled on Saturday that Begoña Gómez, spouse of Spanish government president Pedro Sánchez, must face criminal proceedings on corruption charges. The judicial ruling also prohibited her from leaving the national territory.
The investigation centres on alleged irregularities by which Gómez is said to have exploited her position to facilitate employment contracts. She denies all accusations. The complaint was filed by far-right organisations.
Investigating magistrate Juan Carlos Peinado ordered that the investigated person surrender her passport, be prevented from leaving Spain, and appear before the courts twice a month.
This case forms part of several investigations into alleged corruption affecting Sánchez's circle, one of the few left-wing leaders remaining in Europe. The president himself does not appear to be implicated in any case and has denounced what he characterises as a campaign to oust him from power.
Several close associates, including the Socialist Party's number three and the former Transport Minister, are being investigated in cases related to alleged bribes linked to public works, oil and gas contracts, and the purchase of face masks during the pandemic. All deny the allegations.
Additionally, Spain's National Court confirmed that it is investigating former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero for allegedly heading a network that obtained benefits by exerting pressure on public authorities in favour of third parties, including the airline Plus Ultra. Zapatero also denies the allegations.
