ALICANTE • Spanish police carried out more than 15 house searches and warehouse inspections in a wide-ranging operation against counterfeiting. During the operations, officers discovered approximately 16 tonnes of counterfeit goods, according to information provided by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO).
The action was framed within Operation Cleantrade, carried out by Spanish police in the context of the European Multidisciplinary Platform against Criminal Threats. Europol, Interpol and the European Anti-Fraud Office also participated in the major operation.
Several people were arrested as suspected perpetrators, while investigations remain ongoing. Sports products, particularly football kits, are among the categories most affected by counterfeiting during major global sporting events.
According to EUIPO estimates, counterfeiting causes annual sales losses of around €12 billion in the European textiles sector. Those affected also include clothing manufacturers and sports equipment producers.
