A prisoner at the Monterroso facility attacked three employees during a medical check-up. One worker was injured and received treatment outside the prison. The inmate was placed in solitary confinement after being subdued.

The Monterroso detention centre in the province of Lugo has experienced another incident of violence involving a prisoner attacking facility staff. The altercation occurred on Wednesday morning when an inmate assaulted three workers, with one of them sustaining serious injuries.
Sources close to the investigation told Europa Press that the incident took place during a medical appointment. The inmate, described as a person with a history of violent behaviour, launched an assault against staff, forcing prison officers to intervene to control the situation. In order to move the individual to the solitary confinement area, officials had to use the authorised physical restraint methods.
During the intervention, one of the three assaulted employees suffered injuries requiring medical treatment outside the prison, specifically at the corresponding emergency centre.
This type of incident has occurred previously at the same facility. In August 2023, the trade union organisation CSIF made public a complaint about a similar attack in which two prison officers were subjected to violence by an inmate. On that occasion, the prisoner charged at one of the workers, striking him in the nose area with his forehead, while another employee was struck with kicks.
