Eight and a half years in prison for footballer Rafa Mir for sexual assault
The Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community sentenced footballer Rafa Mir to 8 years and a half in prison for rape and assault, while his teammate Pablo Jará received two and a half years for sexual offences against another young woman.
Eight and a half years in prison for footballer Rafa Mir for sexual assault
The Provincial Court of Valencia imposed a sentence of eight and a half years imprisonment on striker Rafa Mir after finding him guilty of rape and assault. His teammate Pablo Jará was also sentenced to two and a half years in prison and ordered to pay a fine for sexual assault, offences against the dignity of the person, and minor injuries against a second victim. This was reported by the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community, according to El Mundo.
The judgment, notified to the parties on Monday, is not yet final. In addition to the prison sentences, the court ordered the first convict to pay 64,000 euros in compensation to the main victim, and the second to pay 6,280 euros to the person who filed a complaint against him.
During the trial, Mir denied sexually assaulting the young woman. In questioning conducted exclusively by his own lawyer, he maintained that everything happened "by mutual consent" and that "that is how things happened that night".
The victim, by contrast, recounted that the footballer sexually assaulted her and raped her on two occasions. According to her testimony, she started crying, had difficulty breathing, was afraid and asked him to stop, but he continued.
The Public Prosecution had requested a sentence of ten and a half years in prison for Mir, which the court ultimately reduced to eight and a half years.
