Drug trafficking network dismantled that used Guadiana river as entry route
The Spanish Civil Guard and Portugal's Republican National Guard (GNR) have dismantled a criminal organisation that was bringing drugs into the Iberian Peninsula through the Guadiana river, according to Google News ES — Crime. Under Operation 'Trident', the two police forces seized a total of 10,600 kilos of hashish distributed across 265 packages, seized nine vehicles and three firearms, and arrested ten people.
First intervention: clandestine warehouse in Ayamonte
The investigation began in the early hours of 20 August, when an extensive surveillance operation located a drug storage facility in a building in Ayamonte, in the province of Huelva. Officers caught three members of the network there and seized 132 packages of hashish weighing 5,280 kilos.
During the search, security forces seized six vehicles, five of which had theft reports and had been modified for transporting narcotics, as well as a pistol and an assault rifle, both with ammunition. The three arrested individuals were remanded in custody after being brought before the courts on suspicion of drug trafficking, unlawful possession of firearms, vehicle theft and falsification of documents.
Second raid: Portuguese bank of the Guadiana
On 22 August, just two days later, the joint operation moved to a building located in Portugal, on the banks of the Guadiana river, where a second clandestine warehouse was detected. In that intervention, officers seized another 133 packages of hashish totalling 5,320 kilos, a pistol and three motor vehicles, at least one of which had a theft report.
Several members of the group attempted to flee aboard a vessel, but a combined operation using air, maritime and land-based resources managed to intercept the boat during its escape. The action culminated in the arrest of seven more individuals involved, who were brought before the courts in Portugal and similarly remanded in custody.
