Shots fired into air in Ceuta to disperse massive migrant settlement
The National Police fired shots into the air to disperse a settlement in which thousands of migrants were concentrated in Ceuta, according to Google News ES — Crime (es). The intervention took place amid a situation which, according to police sources, included fights and sexual assaults inside the camp.
Officers resorted to this use of force in order to restore order and proceed with the eviction of the enclave, where the concentration of people had resulted in episodes of violence. "There were fights, sexual assaults...", said the sources consulted by El Mundo.
The settlement, made up of several thousand people, had become a focal point of internal conflicts that the authorities considered untenable. The police action sought to disperse the concentration without resorting to direct intervention against those gathered, using shots fired into the air as a deterrent element.
Ceuta, an autonomous Spanish city on the border with Morocco, regularly experiences mass arrivals of migrants from the African continent, which generates constant pressure on local reception and security services.
