During May, police officers in the Granada province carried out a large-scale operation that resulted in the capture of dozens of fugitives with active arrest warrants, some issued by courts in other countries. This was reported by Onda Cero.
The operation resulted in 84 arrests. The largest concentration occurred in the capital, where 73 detainees led to the resolution of 80 cases. In Motril, 10 people were arrested on state arrest warrants, whilst in Baza one additional warrant was resolved with one arrest.
In total, the operation satisfied 91 requests. Several of them came from final sentences pending execution; others came from open judicial proceedings in different courts.
The vast majority of the offences linked to these warrants fell within the realm of property crime and socio-economic offences: robberies with violence, theft and fraud. Cases also detected related to gender-based violence or reckless driving under the influence of substances or alcohol.
After being handed over to the requesting authorities, all active cases were closed.
The intervention highlights the police force's capacity to track down fugitives and the importance of collaboration between national and international security forces to combat crime that crosses borders.
