Haulage driver arrested in Gipuzkoa accused of strangling his wife on two occasions in five days
A 59-year-old haulage driver with a residence in Torrevieja (Alicante) was arrested in the early hours of Saturday in Astigarraga (Gipuzkoa) by Ertzaintza officers, accused of habitual abuse of his wife. According to reports, the arrest followed a call from the Emergency Department of Donostia Hospital, which had alerted officers that it was treating a woman with injuries consistent with the mistreatment she herself described.
The victim, aged 50, told Basque Police that over the previous five days her husband had attempted to strangle her on two occasions and had struck her with a blunt object, causing injuries to her torso, upper and lower limbs and head.
The couple lived in Torrevieja but travelled regularly together due to the man's work as a haulage driver. According to the woman's account, on Sunday 23 August the aggressor attempted to strangle her inside the lorry cabin. Her screams and the presence of people in the surrounding area caused the man to stop, although the following day he attempted it again and struck her with a blunt object in different parts of her body. In the days that followed, he also threatened to attack their daughter together.
The victim devised a stratagem to escape the situation: this Friday she feigned being seriously ill, which led her husband to request help from a car park attendant in the Astigarraga car park where they were parked. The attendant called an ambulance, which took the woman to Donostia Hospital. Once at the medical centre, without the alleged aggressor present, the woman recounted what had happened and stated that the mistreatment had been occurring for years.
Ertzaintza officers who attended the hospital accompanied the victim to file a complaint at the police station once she received medical discharge. The man was arrested on suspicion of physical assault and habitual mistreatment and taken to police premises. On Saturday midday he was placed at the disposal of the court. This was confirmed by the Basque Government's Department of Security.
