Tourists arrive at Son Banya 'drug supermarket' just as police conduct operation
The National Police and municipal services of the Palma town council carried out a new incursion into the Son Banya shantytown settlement on Thursday, known as Mallorca's drug supermarket. The operation resulted in at least seven people arrested and the demolition of recently installed infrastructure.
Among the dismantled structures were two surveillance towers erected by the clans to detect the presence of officers. A sales point that had been decorated with motifs supporting the Spanish football team during the World Cup was also destroyed.
During the search, officers discovered advertising for a special promotion in the style of "Black Friday": cocaine at forty-five euros, heroin and crack at fifty. In addition to the seized material, accounting books were collected that could provide information about the volume of the illicit business.
In the middle of the operation, a private vehicle entered the area carrying several tourists who had recently arrived on the island. According to initial investigations, a German resident of Palma had reportedly offered himself as a driver to show them different places on the island, including the Son Banya settlement.
The visitors failed to acquire any substance. The car was impounded and the driver will be reported for breach of passenger transport regulations, as he did not have the corresponding authorisation to provide that service.
