During a surveillance operation on the motorway connecting Jerez with Los Barrios, officers from the Guardia Civil intercepted a high-end vehicle that aroused their suspicions due to the behaviour of its occupant.
According to reporting by Car and Driver, the incident took place on 28 May, near the municipality of Medina Sidonia in Cádiz. It was around 22:00 hours when a patrol pulled over an Audi Q7 in which a single person was travelling.
The uneasiness displayed by the man at the wheel prompted the uniformed officers to conduct a more thorough search. In the rear of the car they found two sports bags whose contents proved striking: numerous bundles of banknotes in denominations of €10, €20 and €50.
The total amount reached €815,775. This sum considerably exceeds the legal thresholds for the transport of cash within the state. Spanish nationals must notify the Tax Agency of any movement of more than €100,000 through form S1. For non-EU residents, the limit falls to €10,000.
As he could not present documentation justifying the source of such funds, the cash was seized and the individual was brought before the judicial authority. He is accused of money laundering, covered under articles 301–304 of current penal law.
Conviction for this type of offence can result in a custodial sentence of between six months and five years, supplemented by a financial penalty of up to three times the amount seized. If the assets originated from crimes such as drug trafficking, corruption or embezzlement, the criminal consequences become considerably more severe.
