In the early hours of 28 May, a 31-year-old man executed a plan to end the life of a 26-year-old in Fuenmayor, a locality in La Rioja. The motive for the attack stemmed from a romantic relationship: the suspected perpetrator had discovered that his partner maintained a connection with the victim.
The Civil Guard has reconstructed the events following the conclusion of the investigation. The aggressor persuaded his partner to contact the young man and arrange to meet him in an isolated location. That night, the suspect travelled there with his partner and his young son. From her mobile phone, he sent the location to the young man so he would come.
The victim arrived on foot at the agreed location. The detained man asked him to approach a nearby bench, ostensibly to talk. With the young man with his back turned, the aggressor pressed the accelerator and hit him with the car. He then got out of the vehicle and continued the assault.
The attacker's partner attempted to intervene, but she too received blows until she lost consciousness. The man picked up a heavy object from the ground and delivered further impacts to the young man, causing his death. He then turned against his partner and attempted to suffocate her on two separate occasions.
A resident of the area who witnessed the scene intervened critically. He reproached the aggressor and managed to make him stop the violence just before a Civil Guard unit arrived, which proceeded to arrest him immediately.
The judge ordered the provisional imprisonment of the detained man, with no possibility of bail, for consummated homicide and attempted homicide against his partner. The woman was not listed in the domestic violence monitoring system, as she had never filed a prior complaint.
