Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has imposed precautionary measures on Begoña Gómez, spouse of government president Pedro Sánchez. The judicial order requires her to surrender her passport and appear before authorities fortnightly until a sentence is handed down in the proceedings against her.
Gómez was charged in April following two years of investigation. The offences attributed to her are corruption, embezzlement of public funds, abuse of influence and misappropriation.
The case centres on the creation of a university chair at the Complutense University of Madrid, which she co-directed. The investigation concerns the alleged use of public resources and institutional contacts to benefit private interests.
