In the Spanish city of Almería, an unusual arrest of two young Belgians took place. Police officers initially attended the scene following reports of three luxury vehicles parked badly with foreign registration plates. One of them, moreover, was blocking the exit from a garage.
While police were preparing a towing vehicle and a parking fine, a technician from a lift company appeared at the location. He informed the authorities that several foreigners had become trapped in a faulty cabin in a neighbouring building. The officers took advantage of the situation and decided to identify the rescued persons in the hope of finding the drivers of the badly parked cars.
Their intuition was confirmed. Among those freed were two Belgians aged 19 and 22 years old. During a thorough search, officers discovered a forged British driving licence on one of them. In the pockets of both men they found the keys to the three luxury vehicles.
A detailed investigation revealed further irregularities. The cars had altered chassis numbers and their registration documents were tampered with. Inside the vehicles, law enforcement also found several petrol cans and a metal box containing walkie-talkies, which according to Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws are typically used by organised groups engaged in car trafficking.
Both men ended up in preventive custody and were placed at the disposal of the judicial authorities. They face accusations of participation in document forgery and vehicle smuggling.
