A lottery ticket seller has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison in Spain for a million-euro fraud committed in 2012. The man attempted to keep a €4.7 million prize that belonged to another customer in A Coruña, in the north-west of the country.
According to Yle, the original buyer came to the shop to check his ticket. The employee assured him that none of the numbers were correct. Subsequently, the seller claimed to have found the coupon on the shop floor and attempted to cash in the prize.
Local authorities suspected the deception and refused to hand over the money. Despite this, the defendant claimed the amount for eight years. The actual victim died in 2014, but the court ordered the sum to be paid to his heirs.
The court found it proven that the seller committed serious fraud. The sentence is not final and can be appealed.
