Tension in Arenal: dozens of street vendors obstruct police arrest

According to reporting by the Majorca Daily Bulletin, approximately fifty street vendors surrounded agents from Palma's Local Police in Arenal last Thursday afternoon in an attempt to prevent the arrest of one of their associates.

The incident took place around five o'clock in the afternoon on Fita Street, a road that marks the boundary between Palma's Arenal and Llucmajor's Arenal. The officers had intercepted a street vendor and proceeded to arrest him on suspicion of a crime against industrial property, related to the sale of counterfeit merchandise.

Within minutes, roughly fifty unlicensed vendors gathered around the police officers. The agents received verbal abuse during the confrontation.

Given the severity of the situation, reinforcement from the National Police was requested. Following their arrival, the detainee was transported in an unmarked police vehicle.
