Attack in Trappes and La Verrière: suspect under influence of drugs, counterterrorism investigation opened
A 35-year-old man, suspected of shooting dead one person and injuring five others on Friday morning in municipalities south-west of the Paris conurbation, had traces of cocaine and cannabis in his blood at the time of the incidents. The information, transmitted by the DPA news agency, is based on statements from the French counterterrorism prosecution (PNAT). Investigators are pursuing the qualification of a terrorist attack with racist motivation.
The shots were fired on Friday morning in Trappes and La Verrière, localities situated south-west of the capital. According to Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez, the attacker used an automatic weapon at three different locations. Law enforcement officers quickly apprehended the suspect in the neighbouring municipality of Coignières.
The thirty-something was transferred from his police custody cell to the psychiatric service of the Paris police prefecture. A medical examination is to establish whether his mental state permits the interrogation to resume. Three acquaintances and friends of the suspect remain incarcerated for the time being.
