Far-right violence in Nice during a protest

A mobilisation day on Saturday, 24 October ended in violence in Nice. According to Le Figaro, clashes broke out in the late afternoon between far-right activists dressed in black and protesters, not far from Place Masséna in the city centre. Law enforcement, comprising gendarmes, riot police and police officers, had until then kept far-right groups separate from the protests despite a ban on gatherings.

Three people were injured during the scuffles. Eleven far-right individuals were arrested on the spot. The following day, Damien Martinelli, Public Prosecutor of Nice, indicated that these eleven people had been arrested in two vehicles. Several of them were carrying equipment: masks, gloves, tear gas and batons. Five of those arrested were already known to police, the magistrate specified.

An on-the-spot investigation was opened. The investigations must clarify the exact circumstances of these clashes and establish the responsibilities of each party.
