Mavraganis in police custody — sixth arrest warrant in fixed match investigation
Giorgos Mavraganis, an associate of Greek Basketball Federation (EOK) President Vangelis Liolios, surrendered voluntarily to the Attica General Police Directorate (GADA) and was arrested, according to Ethnos. With the execution of the warrant against him, all six arrest warrants issued in connection with the case have now been completed.
The case concerns the EOK president and other individuals from the Greek basketball sphere who face prosecution for match-fixing.
Approximately 50 matches under prosecutorial investigation
According to information reported by Ethnos, judicial authorities are examining approximately fifty basketball matches across all categories. The activity extends chronologically from 2016 to 2026 and includes, among other things, a match abroad.
Under investigation are not only matches from the top tier. The investigations also concern youth and school championships, a fact that indicates that the alleged match-fixing extended across multiple levels of the sport.
Amarousio CAE complaint opened the investigation
The first material that reached the hands of the Sports Prosecutor was, according to information, a complaint filed last April by CAE Amarousio. That complaint concerned the functioning of the EOK and its president.
Subsequently, the prosecutorial investigation was enriched with additional complaints and witness statements. Two of these witnesses gave statements that authorities characterised as exceptionally significant, as they contained first-hand knowledge of how matches are fixed.
Witnesses admitted receiving money
The two witnesses allegedly admitted that they have received money in the past for fixed matches. Their voluntary cooperation with the prosecutorial authority absolved them of criminal liability, provided they reported everything they knew about illegal activities in the basketball sphere.
The investigative material includes messages and other evidence pointing to match-fixing in both the top tier and lower categories — even in youth and school championships.
