Suspicious Lithuanian account at centre of investigation into Kolonaki doctors
A bank account belonging to one of two detained doctors implicated in the Mazonakis case has been discovered in Lithuania, according to reports by In.gr.
Vasilis Lampropoulos, police correspondent for the newspapers "TA NEA" and "TO VIMA", revealed on MEGA that "the Financial Crime Investigation Authority has identified a suspicious account belonging to one of the accused in the Kolonaki case, in Lithuania". According to Lampropoulos, this account appears to have been opened in early 2020 or 2021.
The initial notification from the Lithuanian authorities suggests that the account has not received any funds and no evidence of specific transactions has been identified. However, Greek authorities have not ruled out the possibility of direct transfers that remain unknown at this stage.
The reason the account has attracted the attention of investigators relates to the bank in which it was opened: it is an institution that has been internationally questioned due to suspicions of money transfers from terrorism, money laundering and other suspicious activities. "Thus, the opening of the account at this particular bank has raised the suspicions of Greek authorities, in order to establish why this account was opened in Lithuania", the journalist stated.
Investigations are focusing, among other things, on whether the account is inactive or whether transfers have been made that have not yet been fully recorded. Meanwhile, a prosecutor's order is expected for the opening of a safe deposit box that the two doctors maintained at a bank branch in Kolonaki.
It is worth noting that the authorities have not yet identified the main volume of money that the two doctors are alleged to have received from medical procedures costing several thousands of euros. The investigation into the financial activities of the doctors from Karneadou Street remains ongoing.
