Sixth warrant executed in Greek basketball match-fixing investigation
An associate of the Greek Basketball Federation (EBF) president Vangelis Liolios presented himself voluntarily on Wednesday afternoon at the General Police Directorate of Attica and was arrested. A warrant for his arrest was pending against him as part of an investigation into match-fixing in Greek basketball, according to Dikastiko.gr.
With his arrest, the execution of the sixth and final warrant issued in connection with the case was completed. The individuals covered by the case file come from the field of sports administration and refereeing.
Sports prosecutor investigation into bribery and corruption
The warrants were issued following an investigation conducted by the sports prosecutor, prompted by complaints regarding the possible commission of criminal offences. According to information, the individuals involved are being prosecuted, as the case may be, for offences of bribery and corruption in sport.
The investigation covers complaints about match-fixing in both the first division of Greek basketball and lower divisions, spanning at least five years. The case file includes, among other things, messages from individuals involved and statements that were brought to the attention of the sports prosecutor.
They refused to provide explanations — warrants followed
According to the same information, the six individuals had been previously called to provide explanations as part of the prosecutor's investigation, without responding to the summons. Their non-compliance led to the institution of criminal proceedings and the consequent issuance of arrest warrants.
Following the institution of criminal proceedings, the case file was forwarded to an investigating judge. The defendants are expected to be called before the investigating judge to provide explanations for the complaints against them.
