Messina, two men from Catania arrested for fake carabiniere scam
State Police stop two men in the act as they attempted to rob an elderly woman using the fake military officer scheme. The jewellery was recovered.
Scam thwarted in Messina, two arrests
According to questure.poliziadistato.it, officers from the State Police arrested two men from Catania, aged 60 and 42 respectively, in the act of committing the crimes of attempted aggravated fraud in concert and theft by snatching.
The two had telephoned an elderly woman in the northern area of Messina, posing as carabinieri. They told her she was involved in a robbery at a jewellery shop and that they needed to check the valuables in her possession to rule out any responsibility on her part.
Once at the victim's home, the man snatched the jewellery from her hands and left in a car with his accomplice. Officers from the Volanti intercepted the vehicle shortly afterwards, stopped the two men and recovered the stolen goods, which were returned to the woman.
On the orders of the duty Public Prosecutor of the Public Prosecutor's Office at the Court of Messina, both were taken to Messina Gazzi prison whilst awaiting the hearing to confirm the arrest. The suspects are to be considered innocent until a final conviction.
