Attempted fraud blocked by Mobile Squad

According to questure.poliziadistato.it, State Police have arrested an Italian 20-year-old for attempted aggravated fraud against an elderly person. The operation was conducted by the Mobile Squad of Turin Police Headquarters as part of activities aimed at combating crimes against vulnerable groups.

The young man, who had arrived from Naples, purchased a rucksack at Porta Nuova station and headed to Corso Lombardia by taxi. He arrived near a residential building and waited for a resident to open the main door so he could enter the building and go up to the victim's flat, a 93-year-old woman.

The woman had received a telephone call from someone claiming to be a Marshal of the Carabinieri, telling her that her identity had been used to register a car involved in a jewellery shop robbery. The fake officer kept her in continuous video call, preventing her from contacting family members or the emergency number. He ordered her to gather all her precious objects, money and antique pieces from the house, adding that a drone would verify the recovery of the goods.

The Mobile Squad blocked the 20-year-old inside the building as he was heading to the victim's flat, which she had already gathered jewels from. During the search, officers found the mobile phone used to communicate with his accomplices. The criminal proceedings are at the preliminary investigation stage; the presumption of innocence applies until a final conviction.
