Matricide in Chiari
According to ilgiorno.it, Eduart Xhani, 21, killed his mother Lusha Meleqe, 39, with a series of knife wounds during the night of 3 November in Chiari, in the province of Brescia. The woman received approximately ten stab wounds to the upper part of her body in the family apartment on Via Tagliata, where the two had moved in August after having lived in the area for a long time.
The young man, born in San Bonifacio and second-generation Italian of Albanian origin, left the residence shortly after the incident. The following morning he presented himself voluntarily to the carabinieri in Cremona, stating that he had killed his mother. The prosecutor ordered his detention and the 21-year-old was taken to prison. An autopsy will clarify the exact number of wounds.
At the time of investigations, the young man appeared to be in a confused state and provided no useful information about the motive for the crime. Investigators continue to work to precisely reconstruct the events that occurred in the residence and the family context that led to the act. The carabinieri from the Chiari company and the investigative unit have launched inquiries, whilst specialists from the Scientific Investigations Section carried out examinations in the apartment.
Firefighters, paramedics and mayor Gabriele Zotti also attended the scene. The woman's four siblings were also present. According to Zotti, this is "a family known and well integrated" — Lusha's two brothers work in the construction sector. "An inexplicable episode that raises a great question," declared the mayor.
Those who knew Eduart describe him as a well-mannered and serious young man. Dennis Beqiri, president of the Albanian association in Chiari and owner of the Alba House estate agency where the young man had completed an internship, emphasised that he worked with his uncles. "He did not have a father by his side; his uncle was like a parent to him," Beqiri said. Representatives of the Albanian community recalled that the mother was "a wonderful person, she raised him alone together with his uncles" and expressed their bewilderment at the act, calling it "unforgivable" and not representative of the community.
The case is part of a series of matricides that have occurred in recent months in Lombardy. Last March, the Court of Assise in Brescia sentenced 59-year-old Mauro Pedrotti to life imprisonment for strangling his mother Santina Delai, 78, in her apartment in Puegnago del Garda in February 2024. Pedrotti initially accused a robber, but gave himself away by hastening to contact funeral homes before the police, eventually breaking down at the barracks and confessing. In Milan, on 25 October, an 87-year-old man died of suffocation after his daughter had gagged him to prevent him from disturbing neighbours. The daughter was arrested on charges of aggravated homicide due to the family relationship.
