Protest over port fire turns into tensions

According to rainews.it, on Friday 6 November, approximately 200 people gathered in Piazza Libertà in Trieste following the deaths of two people who were burned alive on Monday in a dilapidated building in the old port. The protest on Monday had remained peaceful, with migrants in the square alongside associations and volunteers.

The procession on Friday took a different turn when the protesters attempted to occupy the former market on Via Flavio Gioia, located behind the railway station. Police intervened with numerous units, surrounding the building and the protesters and proceeding with a raid.

In the moments of heavy tension that followed, three officers sustained injuries: a police headquarters official was struck on the head by a pipe bomb and transported to hospital, while two other officers were injured by stone-throwing. A woman was arrested and taken to police headquarters. Subsequently, part of the procession moved in front of the police headquarters to demand her release.
