Residents of the Grand Duchy have recently been targeted by a mobile phishing campaign. Strangers are sending them text messages impersonating agents of the "Grand Ducal Police", demanding payment of a non-existent traffic violation. These communications actually originate from a telephone number based in South-East Asia.
The public order services have stressed that no enforcement procedures are ever initiated through this method. Penalty notifications are exclusively sent by registered postal mail. The fraudsters are using caller ID spoofing technology that allows them to display a national or government number on the recipient's phone, thereby creating a false impression of legitimacy.
Officials are urging anyone solicited in this manner not to be swayed by the artificial sense of urgency and to contact the institution mentioned directly through official channels. They are also asking the public to warn elderly relatives, who are the primary targets of these malicious schemes.
