Death sentence in El Jadida for murder of 70-year-old mother by her son

The criminal chamber of the El Jadida Court of Appeal pronounced a death sentence on Tuesday against a man found guilty of the murder of his mother, aged 70 years. According to fr.le360.ma, the crime was committed in the douar Chouiref, in the municipality of Moulay Abdallah, in the province of El Jadida, and provoked considerable upheaval within the local population.
The facts date back to July. Elements of the Moulay Abdallah gendarmerie had been alerted to an assault committed by a man in his forties against his mother at the family home. Upon their arrival at the scene, they apprehended the suspect. The victim, transported urgently to the Mohammed V provincial hospital in El Jadida, succumbed to her injuries.
The newspaper Assabah, in its edition of Friday 30 October, reported that "the various phases of the trial attracted the full attention of those present on account of the atrocity of the act attributed to the accused, who killed his mother in a family setting supposed to afford him protection and affection".
The prosecution had decided to pursue the accused for wilful homicide with premeditation against a relative in the ascending line. Following the investigation, he had been referred to the criminal chamber of first instance. During the trial, the accused attempted to plead mental disorders. The court did not accept this argument and pronounced the capital sentence.
