Driver arrested in Agadir after running over police officer twice
Moroccan police arrested a private car driver and his two companions in the city of Agadir on Thursday morning following a serious incident currently being treated as attempted murder. According to reports monitored by Hespress, the driver refused to comply with stop orders at a checkpoint near the northern entrance to the city and continued on his way without stopping.
A motorcycle police patrol moved to intercept the vehicle on Mohamed V Street, but the driver deliberately collided with one of the security personnel, then reversed his car and ran over him a second time before fleeing the scene.
Police launched a pursuit operation that ended with the arrest of the driver on Thursday morning, along with two people who were in the vehicle. Initial reports indicate that the passengers were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The injured officer was taken to Agadir University Hospital for necessary treatment and remains in stable condition despite the injuries sustained while performing his duties.
The investigation is focusing on determining the driver's intent behind his actions, particularly his decision to reverse and run over the police officer again following the initial collision, which suggests the deliberate nature of the incident. Investigators are also seeking to establish the individual criminal responsibility of each suspect.
The three have been placed in police custody under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor, while investigations continue to clarify the circumstances of the refusal to stop, the pursuit that followed, and to determine the extent of the passengers' involvement in what occurred.
