The Anti-Crime Brigade (BAC) 972 seized two Taurus 9mm pistols, magazines and a laser sighting device during neighbourhood checks in Fort-de-France, according to la1ere.franceinfo.fr. The national police provided no further details in order not to compromise ongoing investigations.
The seizure comes the day after the alleged assassination of a man by gunfire in front of the church in the Balata neighbourhood of Fort-de-France. This murder brings the number of homicides committed on Martinique territory since the start of the year to 27.
In total, 11 firearms were confiscated in the month of September alone, according to law enforcement, which says it is facing increasing violence and drug trafficking.
Police remind those unauthorised to hold weapons that they face "serious legal consequences for unauthorised possession and carrying".
