A man was killed and a five-year-old boy seriously wounded to the head in a shooting in Lamentin on Wednesday evening. Martinique has now recorded 33 homicides since January 2025.

A deadly shooting broke out on Wednesday 19 November shortly before 20:00 in the municipality of Lamentin, in central Martinique, according to linfo.re. A man was killed inside a vehicle. In the back of the same vehicle, a five-year-old boy was seriously struck in the head; he was transported to the Martinique University Hospital. Investigators found approximately twenty 9 mm calibre shell casings around the car.

The public prosecutor's office promptly sent a magistrate to the scene. The investigation was entrusted to the territorial service of the judicial police.

This tragedy brings the number of homicides recorded in Martinique since January 2025 to 33, compared to 29 for the whole of 2024. Of these 33 cases, 29 were committed using a firearm.

Law enforcement officials stress that the French Caribbean islands constitute a strategic transit zone for trafficker networks operating between South America, the United States and Europe.
