Fatal shooting in François: sentences handed down against two accomplices

Two alleged accomplices in the murder of an 18-year-old young man, committed in François on the night of 30 to 31 May 2026, were convicted on Friday 5 June by the Fort-de-France correctional court, according to rci.fm. Tried in immediate appearance, they received custodial sentences for their roles in the shooting. The alleged gunman is still being actively sought.

First defendant identified by his DNA

The first suspect was referred to court after being identified through his DNA. He was prosecuted for having sheltered and assisted the alleged gunman in the days following the facts. He also had to answer for offences committed two months earlier, in April 2026, relating to narcotics and possession of a category B weapon.

At the hearing, the defendant admitted to the facts concerning drugs and weapons, but denied having knowledge of the acts committed by his friend. The court, following the prosecutor's submissions, convicted him to three years' imprisonment with continued detention. In an irregular situation on the territory and already known under another identity for narcotics matters, he was also hit with a permanent ban from French territory.

Second defendant retrieves weapon after the crime

A second individual was arrested after being spotted picking up the weapon at the scene of the shooting. In police custody and then at the hearing, he maintained that he had acted to secure the scene and prevent further shots. He nonetheless admitted to throwing the weapon into the sea, invoking an action committed under the impulse of "adrenaline", without criminal intent according to him.

The correctional court sentenced him to fifteen months' imprisonment with a custodial order, for tampering with a crime scene as well as for carrying and transporting a category B weapon. The sentence was pronounced in accordance with the prosecution's submissions, having regard to his criminal history.

Alleged murderer still at large

The alleged perpetrator of the shooting remains missing at this stage. The gendarmes are continuing active searches. The murder of the 18-year-old, which occurred on the night of Saturday to Sunday in François, had led the town council to step up security measures in the municipality.
