On Tuesday 30 June, gunfire erupted in the centre of Fort-de-France, Martinique, during an armed robbery attempt that turned tragic. An off-duty police officer who was on duty and one of the two attackers were struck.
The incident occurred on the waterfront, near Plage de la Française. Two men attempted to steal the police officer's two-wheeler, a TMAX scooter. The confrontation immediately escalated into a series of shots. First responders counted approximately ten spent cartridges on the ground.
The police officer was wounded in the lower part of his body. The attacker was more seriously wounded, suffering a cardiac and respiratory arrest. The officer's colleagues, who arrived quickly at the scene, performed resuscitation procedures on the attacker.
The robbery accomplice managed to escape on a motorcycle.
Both wounded individuals were evacuated to Martinique University Hospital (CHU).
