The French Navy has intercepted a cargo of nearly three tonnes of cocaine in Atlantic waters, off the coast of French Guiana and Brazil, according to la1ere.franceinfo.fr. The merchandise, estimated at over 200 million euros on the market, is currently being transported to Martinique for destruction under judicial control.
The operation resulted in the seizure of 104 parcels, all of which tested positive for cocaine. The exact circumstances of the interception have not yet been officially detailed by French authorities.
The intercepted vessel and its crew have been handed over to the competent judicial authorities. The case is being handled by the JIRS (Interregional Specialised Court) and OFAST (Anti-narcotics Office), the two bodies responsible for investigations into organised crime and drug trafficking.
The seven people arrested in connection with this operation are to be placed in police custody for a period of up to 96 hours, in accordance with legislation applicable to organised drug trafficking cases.
This seizure comes a few weeks after another major operation in the region: on 17 April, over 500 kilogrammes of cocaine had already been seized off the coast of Martinique.
The figures testify to an intensification of anti-drug efforts in the Caribbean zone. Over the course of 2025, French authorities have intercepted more than 36 tonnes of cocaine, compared to 28 tonnes the previous year.
