Trial of the "big brothers" in Fort-de-France: decorated police officer's character at heart of proceedings

According to ouest-france.fr, it was a police officer with an atypical profile who first stepped up to the bar of the Fort-de-France magistrates' court on Tuesday 27 January 2026 for examination of his character. Slender build, shaved head and direct gaze, this well-regarded and decorated officer is one of the defendants in the so-called "big brothers" trial from Guadeloupe, being heard in Martinique since Monday and with hearings continuing until 10 February.
The case concerns an "criminal association" matter linked to urban violence that had paralysed Guadeloupe between November 2021 and January 2022. The court president summarised at the start of the hearing the facts alleged against the police officer: he is notably accused of having, in November 2021, identified the Spip — the Prison Insertion and Probation Service, which was set alight on 26 November of the same year — as potentially constituting "a target". He is also accused of having shared information about "the methods of law enforcement forces" as well as about the "sound system" of a vehicle.
When questioned about his character, the defendant stated: "I am against injustice." A statement that contrasts with the nature of the accusations brought against him in this lengthy trial expected to continue in Fort-de-France until mid-February.
