Police end four-day siege on Dyrøya with arrest
A man was arrested on the night of Saturday in his residence on Dyrøya in Troms, according to Google News DK — Crime (da) citing Nordlys. The arrest concludes a situation that had been ongoing for several days.
– One person has been arrested. No persons were injured in connection with the operation. The arrested person is now being transported to Tromsø, says operations commander in Troms police district, Robin Åsheim Lindberg.
Police have also removed cordons, and traffic is now flowing normally. Residents who were evacuated from their homes can return.
Started as a welfare check
The situation arose on Tuesday afternoon when a police patrol and an ambulance were sent to the address on Dyrøya after the man himself made contact and acted in a manner that gave cause for concern. When the emergency services arrived, they were met with what they perceived as a weapon and withdrew. Later during the operation, shots were fired at police personnel.
As a result, substantial resources were sent to Dyrøya. Personnel from police districts in Nordland, Agder, Finnmark and Trøndelag participated, as did national emergency response resources.
– Large resources have been used in handling this situation, all in an attempt to use time as a tool and reach a solution without anyone being injured, emphasises operations commander Lindberg.
Repeated attempts to get the man to surrender
Police attempted for several days to establish dialogue and get the man to voluntarily leave the residence, but he showed repeatedly no willingness to surrender, according to Lindberg.
– It has been a demanding case that has been ongoing for many days. The person has been in the immediate vicinity of firearms throughout the period, and the assessment has consistently been that any potential operation would entail considerable risk for the personnel and for the person himself, says Lindberg.
On the night of Saturday, police carried out the operation at a time assessed to entail lower risk for all involved.
– We do not wish at present to go into detail about the methods police attempted over the past days, but will return to that. However, many different methods have been tried to reach a solution, the operations commander reports.
Police praise the local population
Police take the opportunity to praise the population on Dyrøya for their handling of the past days' security measures.
– There is no doubt that the security measures have affected the local population, but this has always been done with a view to the safety of both our own personnel and the island's residents, says Lindberg.
Police also extend great thanks to the collaborative partners who contributed with logistics, road closures and emergency response throughout the entire process.
The arrested man has now been sent to Tromsø. Police do not wish to provide any information about his health condition. The case will be investigated further in the aftermath of the incident, according to Lindberg.
