Armed man on Dyrøya arrested after four-day barricade
A Norwegian man who had barricaded himself with weapons in a house on the island of Dyrøya since Tuesday was arrested by police during the night of Saturday. No one was injured during the operation.
Police ended four-day siege on northern Norwegian island
A man who had barricaded himself in a house on the island of Dyrøya in northern Norway since Tuesday was arrested by police during the night of Saturday. This is stated by Norwegian police according to Ekstra Bladet, which refers to the news agency NTB.
– Police acted against the house at a time when the risk was assessed as lower for all those involved, says operations manager Robin Lindberg from Troms police to NTB.
No one was injured during the operation, but police do not wish to comment on the man's condition.
Shot at officers during the night of Wednesday
Police were first called to the address on Tuesday evening, but officers had to withdraw after being threatened with what was perceived as a weapon. During the night of Wednesday, the man fired a shot at police.
As a result, police chose to evacuate the man's neighbours and close off a road.
– The assessment has been throughout that any possible operation would entail a considerable risk for personnel and the person himself, says Robin Lindberg according to NTB.
Police received assistance from several police districts and monitored the man with drones. In the meantime, authorities attempted to persuade the man to voluntarily leave the house, but without success.
Around 50 people isolated on the island
The road closures created significant difficulties for residents on Dyrøya. According to Norwegian media outlet NRK, around 50 people were isolated on the island whilst the operation was underway.
Among them were four German tourists from Brandenburg, who were originally supposed to leave Norway on Wednesday but had to extend their stay. Local residents were also forced to use boats to transport food and new tourists around the road closures.
During the night of Saturday, police worked to remove the road closures and restore normal conditions on the island. The investigation work is not yet complete according to police.
