The head of the legal department at the Central Anti-Corruption Bureau has been charged in connection with the procurement and use of the Pegasus surveillance system. The prosecution announced that two former officials from the Warsaw office of the CBA are also figures in the same investigation.
The spyware at the centre of the proceedings enabled the interception of communications from mobile devices and the surveillance of selected individuals. The subject has provoked numerous controversies in the country and abroad in recent years.
The matter has now returned to the front pages. It was previously revealed that the tool was to be used to monitor opposition politicians, journalists and civil society activists not only in Poland but also in other countries. The prosecution is conducting proceedings aimed at clarifying the circumstances of the contracts, the scale of financial expenditure and the legality of the way the system was operated.
The fact that charges have been brought against a person holding a senior position in the structures of the Bureau suggests that the investigation is entering a significant phase and may concern key decisions made at the highest level of the organisation.
