Poland: Pathologist arrested after human embryos found in garden
Polish authorities have arrested a 57-year-old pathologist following the discovery of human embryos in the garden of a property previously owned by the doctor. The prosecutor's office in the city of Rzeszów in south-east Poland is conducting an investigation.
The property is located in the village of Lutowiska, 12 kilometres from the city. New owners, whilst carrying out excavation works on the plot, discovered large quantities of medical waste, including paraffin blocks and microscope slides. Among the findings was a human embryo and other remains that may have come from human embryos, some in early stages of development.
The 57-year-old was the previous owner of the property. According to the prosecutor's office spokesman, the suspect is under investigation for the desecration of remains and the illegal disposal of hazardous waste. These charges could result in a sentence of two to twelve years' imprisonment.
