At the port in Gdynia, customs and criminal services eliminated a shipment containing 1,030 kg of heroin. The estimated market value of the seized substances reaches nearly 220 million zlotys. This is the largest seizure of this kind in our country for over a decade.

The head of the interior affairs ministry Marcin Kierwiński along with finance minister Andrzej Domański presented details of the operation on Monday. As emphasised, in the first five months of the current year, over 83 tonnes of narcotic substances were secured. For comparison, in the entire previous year it was 56 tonnes, and in 2022 only 19 tonnes.

In the same period, 49 laboratories producing narcotics were eliminated and 4 cannabis plantations dismantled. Almost 1,200 people were arrested by police, and 83 of them were charged with leading organised criminal groups.

Minister Domański noted that the interception in Gdynia ranks among the largest in the history not only of Poland, but of the entire European Union. This success was possible thanks to cooperation with British services, which provided information about the planned smuggling.

The containers were to arrive from the United Arab Emirates, and the drugs were hidden in a shipment of decorative bricks. Detection was made possible by modern X-ray scanners installed at border crossings.

In mid-May, officers arrested three suspects – two men and a woman, all aged 33–43 years old and Polish citizens. The Gdańsk regional prosecutor's office charged them with attempting to transport significant quantities of narcotics. Two of them were remanded in custody.

The proceedings are ongoing and further arrests are not ruled out.
